A Quiet Celebration

Monday, September 30th, 2002

We celebrated another quiet anniversary at my house yesterday. It was September 29, 1997 that we moved into our little blue house. No big deal, right? It is, after all, the American Dream to own your own home. Our path to home ownership was just a bit out of the norm. In ...

RedHat 8.0

Sunday, September 29th, 2002

Given my general impatience with waiting for new releases, I installed the RedHat 8.0 beta version on the machine in our offices yesterday evening. I took a bit to play with it beyond the install and came away with some initial impressions. First off, I do understand the concerns of some ...

New Install

I'm posting this from the box in the Fullbrain offices, using the "null" beta version of RedHat 8.0. Check the times between posts. That elapsed time includes a 10-minute drive to the office from home. Not too bad. I'll play a bit and post more later.

Late Beta RedHat

Saturday, September 28th, 2002

I'm putting the "null" beta version of RedHat on my machine in the office this afternoon. Last week, it was an attempt at "limbo." Even though the full version should be out Monday or Tuesday, I'm really itching to see what all the fuss is about. More later.

Great Week in St. Louis

Friday, September 27th, 2002

I'll try not to gloat, but I have to remark on the great week in St. Louis. A week ago tonight, the Cardinals clinched the National League Central for the third time in four years. At the beginning of the week, they swept the Diamondbacks, pulling into a tie for home ...

Coble Responds

A Penguin Shell reader sent me a note this evening about HR 5211. You'll recall that that's the bill that would relieve copyright holder of liability for any damage they might cause your computer in an effort to "protect their copyright." The reader had taken the time to write Representative ...

New Bedfellows

Dubya's had an interesting couple of days when it comes to use of language. Yesterday, he remarked that the Senate, "is more interested in special interests" than in the security of the country. How embarrassing. Here he stands, the Democratically controlled Senate ready to approve his overreaching Homeland Security bill, ...

The Equinox

Tuesday, September 24th, 2002

It's tough to explain the effect winter has on me. With autumn obvious in Iowa, I gave it a shot in today's Penguin Shell: In between the heat of the day and the cold of the night lies the fog, hugging the reeds like translucent saran wrap in the hollows of the ...

Worldwide

Monday, September 23rd, 2002

I noted in Penguin Shell a few weeks ago that I'm considering reviving a blogging project I started a few years ago. Unfortunately, most of the project is lost in the cyber-void, though one of the participants, Man From Matunga managed to save and repost his entries on his own ...

Happy Testing

I'm in the midst of re-burning the first disc of the RedHat 8.0 beta. I managed to trash the first disc this weekend after infinite hours of downloading. Hopefully, it was the burn and not the iso image. In any event, I should be able to find the time mid-week ...
