Happy Testing

September 23rd, 2002 | by Tony Steidler-Dennison |

I’m in the midst of re-burning the first disc of the RedHat 8.0 beta. I managed to trash the first disc this weekend after infinite hours of downloading. Hopefully, it was the burn and not the iso image. In any event, I should be able to find the time mid-week to upgrade my home machine from 7.3 and give this new version of Linux a thorough run-through.

I’m also hoping that RedHat has broken an uncomfortable tradition with this release. In the past, the x.0 versions have, quite frankly, sucked. 6.0 and 7.0 were pretty much throwaways, though the revisions addressed the vast majority of the concerns. I’ve got lots of backup work to do over the next few nights - I just hope it’s not all for the sake of a woefully untested and buggy RedHat version.

Hold onto your hat for a few more days. Null will become release shortly as the main redhat ftp site has the 8.0 directory. Even the mirrors have it already. The permissions on it are still r-x
