Gnome is up and running, but only in the root account and only in safe mode. As soon as it opened the first time, I got two error messages, one related to the sound card, the other to xscreensavers. I don't have speakers on this machine, so I couldn't care ...

I managed to get to the Gnome logo on the screen, but the X server failed before opening the desktop. I'll have to go search to see what I may have missed in the Gnome install. I'm thinking it may be gtk2, though I put that in my USE variable ...

I've gone back to the Gentoo install this afternoon.
As I mentioned, it looks like I got good XFree86 and Gnome installs. I've been working my way through trying to get X to start from my user account. I've gotten errors stating that there are no xauth or xinit files repeatedly. ...

XFree is installed, as best I can tell. I haven't yet configured or tested the installation. Instead, I started the Gnome download as soon as XFree was finished and dashed off the last two sections of Penguin Shell. As promised, I've started the Gentoo install for the upcoming review. There's a world of difference between the SuSE install of a few weeks ago and this one. Gentoo is clearly intended for Linux power users.
