Perspective Management

Sunday, November 24th, 2002

Rested, refreshed, relaxed, and ready to go. That's the feeling tonight after a weekend away from the computer and tech in general. I ran off for the weekend to a retreat in central Iowa, and, I think, got a full battery recharge. The only toy I took with me was ...

The following is the text of a message now being sent from my machine to spammers who invade my electronic privacy: All details of your unsolicited email have been logged, including date and time of receipt, sender email address, domain information, domain administrative and technical contacts, Internet service provider, and all ...

Shower Time

Monday, November 18th, 2002

It's that time of year again. Time for the Earth to pass through the debris trail left by comet Temple-Tuttle and give us, hopefully, one incredible light show. In the Midwest, we're expecting to see as many as 1500 Leonids per hour in the hours between 3 am and 5 ...

Fun With Red Hat

Sunday, November 17th, 2002

I've been having fun the past few hours with Red Hat 8.0. Though I didn't particularly like the Bluecurve© look and feel to start with, it's grown on me. You can see that by the customizations I've made to my desktop in the image at left. The overall look is ...

Perfect

My Iowa Hawkeyes closed out a perfect Big 10 season this afternoon with a 45-21 win over Minnesota. Unfortunately, Ohio State won, as well. The Hawks' regular season is finished. They'll get to sit at home and watch Michigan-Ohio State next week. If Michigan wins, the Hawks will take sole ...

Immediately after finishing the install, I registered the machine with the Red Hat network and ran up2date. There were very few necessary updates. The updates that were listed included a kernel upgrade to 2.4.18-18.x. I ran them all then rebooted and chose the new kernel from Grub. It's the first ...

Install Complete

Saturday, November 16th, 2002

As expected, this install went quickly and without a problem. I've yet to boot to the new Red Hat desktop, but the install itself is done. 32 minutes, start to finish. The Workstation install also required only two of the three install discs.

Default Workstation

Saturday, November 16th, 2002

The first set of notes: The Red Hat install screens have gotten much, much more condensed in 8.0. I chose to install a Workstation. My choices were Personal Desktop, Workstation, Server, or Custom. Each option has a different selection of software and configuration options. The Workstation includes Gnome, Open Office, Mozilla, ...

Red Hat 8.0 Blogcast

Saturday, November 16th, 2002

I'm nearly off and running with the Red Hat 8.0 install blogcast. The background on the machine is here. Stay tuned throughout the afternoon for install and configuration details. By the way - I installed Gentoo on this test machine 20 days ago. It's running with 19 days uptime. It almost ...

Simulating Earth

Saturday, November 16th, 2002

The world's fastest computer was crowned again yesterday. According to CNN: The Earth Simulator in Yokohama, Japan, performs 35.86 trillion calculations per second -- more than 4 1/2 times greater than the next-fastest machine. Earth Simulator, built by NEC and run by the Japanese government, first appeared on the list in June. ...
