Red Hat Install
November 10th, 2002 | by Tony Steidler-Dennison |I’m starting the Red Hat 8.0 install this afternoon for review in Penguin Shell. I’ve done literally hundreds of Red Hat installs, so this will clearly be very familiar territory.
First, a bit about the test box. It’s a 1 Ghz AMD Thunderbird, 128 Mb Crucial RAM. The mobo is some sort of Asus though, since it was a “leftover” in the Fullbrain offices, I’m not sure which model. It could be an A7-V. Storage is a Western Digital 20 Gb. The box has an old ATI video card and an ancient sound card. The monitor is a Gateway EV700 17″. An old Dell keyboard and Gateway (MS) mouse round out the machine. Again, this machine was built from parts laying around the shop, so it’s not a bleeding edge computer.
Here’s how I’ll partition the drive: 75Mb /boot (pretty big, really), 256Mb swap, 8Gb /. The balance will be the /home directory. I’ll set it up for use only by myself and root, as my wife’s account is set up on the production box.
That’s the background. I’ll keep you up to date as the install progresses.
