Default Workstation

The first set of notes:

The Red Hat install screens have gotten much, much more condensed in 8.0. I chose to install a Workstation. My choices were Personal Desktop, Workstation, Server, or Custom. Each option has a different selection of software and configuration options. The Workstation includes Gnome, Open Office, Mozilla, Evolution, IM apps, sound and video apps, games, development tools, and admin tools. These are pretty high-level categories without much indication as to what the development or admin tools might be. I can either accept the default package list or customize the packages to be installed. For the sake of the review, I’ve just accepted the default package list.

I chose to reformat the partitions from ReiserFS to ext3, though I could have left them intact in the disk druid screens.

I also set up the partitions as follows: 78 Mb /boot, 256 Mb swap, 8 Gb /. I left the balance of the 20 Gb hard drive for /home.

The install is starting. The default Workstation install occupies 1888 Mb and installs 652 packages.
