Final Configuration

Immediately after finishing the install, I registered the machine with the Red Hat network and ran up2date. There were very few necessary updates. The updates that were listed included a kernel upgrade to 2.4.18-18.x. I ran them all then rebooted and chose the new kernel from Grub. It’s the first time I’ve successfully upgraded the kernel via rpm. up2date seems faster in this RH version than in previous versions.

I also spent some time tweaking the default workstation install, both adding and removing packages. The new package manager is slick, to say the least. The application packages are grouped in a way that makes sense and there’s full dependency checking with the option to install required packages where necessary. From a package management perspective, the new system rivals YaST2 on SuSE.

Some of the negatives you’ve heard are true. No XMMS out of the box. No Java in Mozilla. Overall, though, I think Red Hat has managed to improve upon an already easy and accurate install routine. Even with updates, I went from zero to a fully working system in less than an hour.

Hey Tony, I was wondering. I used Red Hat last at around 7.2, and I found only one thing wrong. After running an update, at least for the kernel, it would as me to reboot, then when it came back, I would try again, and the same stuff was there. Is there anything that has to be done after up2date is run other than a reboot? Maybe I will try a dual boot here with the 4 GB drive I have left over.

I had the same problem when using lilo. In order to use the new kernel I had to run the command “lilo -v -v”(not in console, but under “run Command). Then reboot, should work.

I used Grub on this install. It gave me the option of both the old and new kernels in the boot screen. I was pretty surprised. I booted to the new kernel and had no problems at all.

I installed RedHat 8.0 download version on my IBM Thinkpad A22e, and ran up2date and upgraded the kernel, and it worked flawlessly too. When i rebooted i had both kernels in the Grub list, and they both worked fine. I still had sound problems, but that wasn’t the kernel’s fault..
