Fun With Red Hat

November 17th, 2002 | by Tony Steidler-Dennison |

I’ve been having fun the past few hours with Red Hat 8.0. Though I didn’t particularly like the Bluecurve© look and feel to start with, it’s grown on me. You can see that by the customizations I’ve made to my desktop in the image at left. The overall look is appealing, though the selection of themes is slim out of the box. I’ve downloaded several others. Window decorations and themes are clustered together in the same menu. That’s actually a nice move, as compared to choosing one and moving to another menu item to select the other.

I’m off to visit in-laws in Davenport for the afternoon. I’ll post a page with the full image of the desktop later this evening - after “The Sopranos,” of course.

I just installed the download version of RedHat 8.0 and I really love it. I was wondering, where do you get your desktop themes?

That’s gkrellm, a system monitoring app. Cerebellum is actually the
machine name. My networked machines are Cerebellum, Cerebrum and Cortex -
    all brain parts!

You’re a sick, sick man, you know. All my machines are named after women. Perhaps i’m no better.

I installed the download version of Redhat 8.0 on my biggest system last night. It’s the first time i’ve seen a linux distro on a fully qualified machine (as aposed to a laptop, or older machine). I must say it’s going quite nicely so far. I tried Mandrake 9.0 first, but had a lot of problems with hardware. RedHat even picked up and configured my USB Cable modem! I was impressed..
I too, would like to know where you get your themes.. i’ve attempted to install a variety of KDE 3 themes, but have NEVER gotten one to install….
