Virtual March

February 27th, 2003 | by Tony Steidler-Dennison |

It was good to have been able to participate in the Virtual March on Washington yesterday. That despite the fact that I could only get through to the offices of Senator Charles Grassley. My calls to the White House and Senator Tom Harkin didn’t make it past the deluge of electronic communication . In fact, it appears that much of the phone system in D.C. was affected by the protest. It’s a powerful example of the ability to organize around an issue online.

In talking with Senator Grassley’s office, I expressed two concerns about a war with Iraq. First, I believe it can only further polarize relations with important allies. Second, the occupation of a Middle Eastern state by American forces can only motivate extremist groups to attempt more terrorist actions rather than fewer. I’m pretty clearly on the record here as being opposed to such a war, so the opportunity to voice that opinion and participate in a mass action was one I couldn’t resist - even if only 1/3 of the calls went through.

    Tony,
Ronald Reagan came close to killing Khadaffi. The terrorist attacks dropped dramatically in France. France had refused fly over permission to the planes that struck Libya.
Our occupation of Iraq will show the leaders in that part of the world that we will not tolerate their support of terrorists.
If the U.N. will step up, they can run the occupation.
Terrorists don’t need us to motivate them. They have their hatred of the Infidel. The Great Satan is also in there.
We can’t make them love us but we can make them fear us.

And perhaps that’s the problem. No one seems to stop and wonder why everyone hates us. This is a country of morons. People who will blindy support any goverment and any action they take. People that would kill blindy if told to.. It sickens me.
I think the USA needs a good World War. A Nuke in Washington might help them realize the error of their ways. Or not - But then, nukes don’t leave a lot behind.. morons or otherwise.

Now this is a more productive endeavor. Cool-headed discussion rather than “baby killer” signs on the evening news.

For personal reasons better left under my hat for now, I didn’t hear a thing about this virtual march. Great idea…
