Such Playful Banter
March 18th, 2003 | by Tony Steidler-Dennison |Clive nails it with his post comparing the intelligence of chat bots to real human chat. In fact, you really should read through the comments to the original post, centered on an online Michael Jackson game. THUL MAK U LAFF.
Interestingly, the posts seem to get more incoherent as time goes on, as if there were some subtle half-life-decay algorithm of moronicity at work here. Even more alarmingly, the more blitheringly weird the posts become, the more likely the authors are to address the post to Michael Jackson himself. Yeee.
This was a timely read. For reasons you’ll have to discover for yourself, I was considering killing the comments on a particular post. Clive’s reminded me of the humor in letting the half-life run its course.

Actually, you’re right — decay is frequently present in many blog comment threads. This would make for a terrific Phd thesis: You analyze a couple of thousand threads in discussion groups, grading the quality of the posts (an admittedly subjective process, but what the heck) and then try and figure out what the algorithm is for coherence-loss in blog comment postings.
