You’re Gettin’ A …
March 18th, 2003 | by Tony Steidler-Dennison |I’m feeling that excitement again. I just checked the Dell site, and the new Inspiron 1000 shipped today. I should have it in my hands on Thursday. With built-in wireless, I’ll have four machines on the network at home - two of which are completely untethered.

My dad just tested 9.1 beta 3, and his wife is a full time (at home) Mandrake user. In fact, I had MD 7.? on another company laptop (a Vaio) a few years ago. I’ve always liked Mandrake. 9.1 on the Dell is a real possibility.
Then again, there’s that challenge with Gentoo. It’s like Linux aerobics - you sweat your butt off through the install, but the end result is so lean and clean.

I’ve heard nice things about 9.1 - wait a few days and a stable build will be out.

I saw on the Slackware channel that 9.0 is official then did a bit of research.
As an unofficial Slackware representative (I help admin #slackware at Freenode.net, as close to the official channel as things can be), I can state that Slackware 9 isn’t out YET.
The Slackware pages aren’t current to reflect that 9 is official. The only reference that 9 is official is the changelog (this may or may not change some time tonight). There are NO official Slack 9 ISOs released for distribution ….yet. Again, this may change in the very near future.
As for now, if you want the latest and greatest, you’ll still have to use the Slackware 9.0 release candidates (RC, also read as BETA), although, the very latest RCs won’t show much of a difference from the official Slack 9.0 release.
Please, don’t jump the gun, people. We’ve already got numerous people coming in asking (no, begging) where the 9.0 ISOs are…it gets dreary spending all your time telling people NO, IT ISN’T OUT YET.

I say (if you have got the time) go the Linux From Scratch route. It could be a great learning experience. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org
