A Distinction
March 22nd, 2003 | by Tony Steidler-Dennison |Wil’s veteran friend has the distinction right:
I could say a lot more about this, but to my mind, you can protest the war, and at the same time, hang a yellow ribbon in the hope that the troops come home safely. Hoping for our folks to come home safe isn’t at all pro-war, to my mind. Writing a letter saying, “Hey, hope you guys are doing okay” doesn’t imply you hope anyone else (like the Iraqis) are being blown to smithereens.
This rings especially true after having watched the coverage for nearly all the waking hours of the past three days. Watching the troops and their families, I can’t help but admire the decision they’ve made to serve their country - honorable and noble, indeed. And make no mistake; the service is from both the troops and the families. They carry the exhuberant idealism of youth. I remember that well, myself, though my service is now 20 years past. I have no doubt that their skills and energy and dedication will win the battle.
The real question is this: have our leaders pushed us into an unwinnable war?

Tony,
There is a columnist for the Moscow Times that can reinforce your dislike of our government. His name is Chris Floyd. I read him weekly and he depresses me because he’s usually right. Latest article at url.

I’m in agreement with you Tony. I didn’t want the troops to be there, but now that they are, the best we can do is support them, and hop that the war is swift and relatively painless. We’ve already had the first casualties - let’s just hope there aren’t too many more.
