Rootkit Patch As Bad As Rootkit

A patch that Sony issued a week ago when virus writers began taking advantage of the software’s file-hiding capabilities actually introduces serious new security risks onto the user’s machine, according to research released today by Princeton University computer science professor Edward Felton.
Word has it, too, that Microsoft is going to step in and repair the damage caused by Sony’s rootkit. My guess is that some Sony heads will roll (as they should), that Sony will incur a huge expense to Microsoft for cleaning up the mess and that lots and lots of lawsuits are gearing up at this very moment.
