Singer Chris Whitley dies aged 45 | BBC News

Singer Chris Whitley, who mixed rock and roll with blues and alternative rock, has died of lung cancer aged 45.

Whitley earned critical and commercial success with his 1991 album Living with the Law, recording 11 follow-ups and touring with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.

I was still selling music when Chris’ first CD “Living With The Law” came out. Put simply, I was mesmerized by it. Think of a country/blues feel with a Daniel Lanois production style. It was very sparse and very, very well done. It’s a CD that I’ve listened to countless times over the past 14 years, discovering something new or rediscovering some interesting aspect each and every time I’ve listened. Though I didn’t listen to much beyond that debut album, it’s sad that he’s passed, especially at such a young age.

His passing is a shame. I’ve managed to keep track of Chris’ career throughout the years. I have all the albums and the rarities. His last album is coming out later this month. It’s called Reiter In. I payed a lot for an import, but you can hear some of it on http://www.redparlor.com It’s amazing, definitely one of his bed. It’s too bad it will be his last record, but at least Chris was able to accomplish a lot while he was here.
