When is too much technology not enough?

After acquiring a BlackBerry through Cingular a month or so ago, I’ve begun to understand why they’re called “crackberries.” Mine is on my hip every waking hour, vibrating with all the email from my 5 accounts. I’m using the PDA functionality prodigiously and even really like the phone (though it will be better when I pick up a Bluetooth headset).

The result, though, is that my desk is literally covered with gadgets. Here are the bits of technology found in my laundry-room office/studio:

  • Behringer Autocom Pro-XL
  • Behringer Ultragain Pro
  • MXL 990 mic on Heil boom
  • Sharp Zaurus SL 5500 PDA
  • RIM Blackberry 7290
  • 1 GB USB flash drive
  • Behringer Eurorack UB-802 mixer
  • 60 GB iPod Photo
  • 512 MB iPod Shuffle
  • Hand-built Ubuntu Linux box, attached to 17″ Samsung flatscreen monitor
  • Dell Inspiron 1100 (XP and Ubuntu)
  • Sirius portable satellite receiver

I think that’s it, other than all the assorted adpaters and cables.

I love the smell of silicon in the morning …

We live in a wonderfull age. 20 years from now, the “development” boom will probably have subsided.

I like the new look of the site!

I think we’ll see development happening in 20 years that we can’t even imagine, now. And, today’s kids, who’ve grown up with computers, will be the old dinosaurs, lacking the vision of their own kids.
