Handled Well
June 20th, 2006 | by Tony Steidler-Dennison |I listened to the ESPN Radio podcast this morning, including a clip from yesterday’s “Mike and Mike” show. The clip was an interview with the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowhers. I was already quietly impressed with how the organization handled the Ben Roethlisberger accident. At the end of the interview, I was completely impressed that the Steelers are handling this like professionals. The concern they’ve expressed since the accident has been solely about his health. There’s not been any talk about the team - it’s been about Roethlisberger’s health. In fact, the Steelers refused to comment on the accident for the first several days, deferring to the healthcare professionals, instead. Can you imagine if this had been Derek Jeter or Drew Bledsoe? George Steinbrenner and Jerry Jones would have been out in the media immediately ranting about the irresponsibility of their players. I can’t claim to be a Steelers fan on the field, but they’ve really won my respect as an organization.
