Ringers Off
December 28th, 2007 | by Tony Steidler-Dennison |We’ve shut the ringers off on the phones at home. For the past few weeks, we’ve been receiving as many as a dozen calls a day from number 000-000-0000, with the caller ID “Unknown Caller.” Remember, we live in Iowa. Under normal circumstances, we might receive a dozen calls in two weeks. Since I got up at 8:00 this morning, the display on the desk phone has lit up with the above information four times - nearly a call every half-hour.
Aside from the aggravation of a constantly ringing phone, I’m irritated as hell by the deception. It’s clear that the campaigns understand the intrusion of the calls, and are trying to minimize the damage to the candidates by obfuscating the source of the calls. If we don’t answer, we don’t know which campaign the call came from. We’re already requiring that campaigns confirm their authorization of television ads (another story here in Iowa - wall to wall political ads on television). We should require that the campaigns also identify themselves truthfully on caller ID.
