Mac OS X 10.5: Time Machine - "The backup volume could not be found" alert

If you erase your designated Time Machine backup disk, such as with Disk Utility, Time Machine will alert you that "The backup volume could not be found", and backups will not be made.

I discovered this issue. I simply powered down the external drive and unplugged everything. I reconnected power and then the USB and it auto’magically appeared and restore proceeded uninhibited.
